Cette pièce de Combo est un « classic », puisque le personnage de gauche et son « Black Lives Matter » avaient déjà été réalisés par l’artiste en 2018 à New York. Le personnage de droite devait, dans sa première version, porter l’inscription « Feminist » sur son tee-shirt, mais la mort de George Floyd, le 25 mai 2020 à Minneapolis (États-Unis), a tout changé.
Le slogan « I Can’t Breathe », l’une des dernières paroles du défunt malgré sa gorge écrasée pendant 8 minutes par le genou d’un policier, est devenu un signe de ralliement international contre les violences policières dans le monde entier.
L’œuvre a été réalisée à Grenoble une semaine après la mort de George Floyd. Combo a souhaité lui rendre hommage à sa façon, dans la continuité de son travail d’artiste engagé qui n’a pas attendu ce tragique événement pour dénoncer la discrimination des Noirs aux États-Unis.

This piece by Combo is a “classic,” since the character on the left with his “Black Lives Matter” had already been created by the artist in 2018 in New York. The character on the right was originally supposed to wear the inscription “Feminist” on his T-shirt, but the death of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, in Minneapolis (United States) changed everything.
The slogan “I Can’t Breathe”, one of the last words spoken by the deceased despite his throat being crushed for 8 minutes by a policeman’s knee, became an international rallying cry against police violence around the world.
The work was created in Grenoble one week after George Floyd’s death. Combo wanted to pay tribute to him in his own way, in keeping with his work as a committed artist who had been denouncing the discrimination against Black people in the United States long before this tragic event.
